Of Mice and Men - Chap. 2

This entry is for periods 6 and 8 students only.

Throughout chapter two, we learn some of the rules - both explicit and implied - of the ranch. We learn what kind of behavior is expected of the men, and what kind of behavior is not tolerated. We also get a glimpse at how the men speak to and treat one another.

All of this leads to a question Steinbeck is posing to the reader: To what degree is life on the ranch – the social behaviors and constructs of the men, that is – a snapshot of life in general? In other words, is the ranch a ‘microcosm’ of real life, or is it simply its own thing?

Here’s your task: Pick a character from another work of fiction - novel, short story, film, television program - and explain, in a thoughtful and thoough paragraph - whether or not that character would fit in on the ranch. Be sure to be specific in your response.

Read the entries before yours -- no repeats allowed! If you’d like some extra credit, feel free to comment on your classmates' responses in separate entries.

  1. In the movie Saving Private Ryan, Private Upham is one of the most cowardly, but most polite people in the movie. Many people on the ranch in Of Mice And Men speak to each other in a manner that today we would maybe consider more on the crude side. Carlson said, "...How's your bitch?" (Steinbeck 35). This is of course simply referring to a dog, but like I said, in a crude way. Private Upham of Captain Miller's (Tom Hanks's) squad, on the other hand, may say things of the literate sort such as, "Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die." He also is a coward in the physical sense. In the climax of the movie, his job is to deliver ammunition to soldiers of the U.S. but he is too afraid to do it, and in the end two of him men die. Where as in the book, they talk about simply "lickin'" (punching) each other for the heck of it. I think Private Upham would not fit in on the ranch in the book Of Mice And Men because he is not quite as raw, or dirty, as many of those on the ranch.

  2. In the movie Brooklyn’s Finest, Tango (Wesley Snipes) is a hardcore undercover cop who plays by his rules only. He is willing to kill whoever he needs to get the job done. He can take a beating and give a beating. He is a tough dude. He would fit right in on the ranch. He is very adamant, once he has made up his mind there is no way of changing it. For example his boss tells him that he has to kill his best friend. He has none of it and refuses. His boss is persistent and keeps on going at him and getting in his face. After awhile he starts to get violent and it takes his partner to keep him from battering his boss. He then walks out the door and gets in his car and drives away. He also swears like crazy so he would fit right in with the other ranchers’ vocabulary. He would not only survive the ranch but he would dominate it.

  3. In the movie, Greese, Danny Zuko is part of the T-Birds. He is a cool, popular guy, that doesn't want to be messed with. He is also one of the leaders of the T-Birds. If he were in the book Of Mice and Men, I believe he would have a hard time adjusting to the ranch, but would finally get how things go about. He will start at the bottom of the 'food chain', and slowly work his way up.

  4. In the book Airhead by Meg Cabot, the mean girl in the school is named Whitney. If she was to come to the ranch, she would have a hard time fitting in mainly because of the way that she thinks so highly of herself. All of the working men at the ranch would probably make sure that she understood what her place would be over there, and she would not be able to stand it after the first five minutes because she would not have her usual posse to back her up. It would be very hard for her to make the transition from most popular to one of the ordinary. On the ranch, the only way that she would survive is if she would somehow be able to become Curley’s new wife. Except for the boss and his family, everyone else is mostly considered equal, which is something that a girl like Whitney would never be able to handle.

  5. I the television show, The Office, Michael Scott would not be able to fit in on the ranch at all. He is a great leader in his work job, but he would not be able to handle the pressure on a ranch like the one Leanie and George work at. Michael is a very sensitive and personal type of person. He feels like he is friends with all of his employees, but all of them, besides Dwight Schrute, think he is very annoying. The work on a ranch is very hard and scary for most people, it is way different than bosing people around in and office building. Michael would have a very hard time trying to fit in because everyone will work hard, do what they are told, and be serious. Michael would attempt to be the leader of the ranch, but he would most likely be punched in the face by George. Michael would not be able to switch from boss, leader, dictator, to hard working, sweaty, employee.

  6. ABC's Modern Family portrays a 'common' family during our time. The ranch in the book, Of Mice an Men, is the same way. The characters act in an exaggerated way as generalizations of the time even though they are far from it. Manny from Modern Family is a kid who loves things done his way. He is very picky about food and comes off as spoiled frequently. If Manny was to live on the ranch, he would have an extremely hard time. With no food selection, he would have a fit which would not be tolerated at the ranch. The terrible hygiene in the ranch would become a serious issue as Manny likes things clean. Manny would also have a hard time taking orders from people who will not say please or thank you. Manny would definitely have a hard time fitting in on the ranch.

  7. In the book the Raisin in the Sun one of the main characters named Walter is the epitome of if you added another person to work at the ranch. Walter has a talent because he will do what he is supposed to do when he is supposed to do without asking questions but wants enough freedom to make his own choices to. I think he would fit in with the other characters because he will also stand up to what he believes in. For example George in Of Mice and Men complains and talks about how he does't like people like Curley but he is willing to do something about it.

  8. The character Jason Bourne, in the movie Bourne Supremecy is the best fit character for the ranch. To live on the ranch you have to be smart, selfish, and determined to do things. When the character Slim is introduced, he gives the vibe that he does not tolerate anybody that is a slacker. Slim turns out to be very smart and also not a jerk either. This fits into the character Jason Bourne because he is an independent runaway criminal that uses his brain and determination to get out of things. Yes Jason Bourne would fit in the ranch because he will not back down to other people such as curly and is smart too.

  9. In the television show, 'One Tree Hill,' main character Peyton Sawyer is slowly adapting to her life of living on her own. Her father is currently traveling half-way around the world on sea, while her mother is looking down on her from above. Peyton is strong, and knows how she must go about each day in order to live a clean, healthy and successful lifestyle. I feel like Peyton would fit in with the ranch because she is so strong and could take anything. She would do her job that is needed at the ranch with no complaints or hesitations.

  10. The character John Coffey, played by Michael Clarke Duncan in the movie Green Mile, would be a great fit for the ranch. While being a big tough guy and a hard worker he doesn't have a troubling attitude and is not a jerk like Curley. While waiting for his death in jail, accused for murder, he proves to be like Lennie and George. He is a big guys with a soft heart like Lennie, but also has brains and personality like George. I think this character would take over the farm with his individuality rather than force.

  11. Bob Saget who plays Danny Tanner in the television show " Full house" I think is a perfect person to work at a ranch. In one episode wherever he is he still does his best. Like at his job he is a reporter in a news cast and he tries having people entertained and informed. Then once he is at home he takes care of his family since he is the only parent there. He knows he has to take the wife's responsibilities also. Wherever he is, he will do his best and keep trying. He is so much like Lennie. He doesn't want to start fights, he tries avoiding it and try solving it another way. Whatever job he is doing he will do it with 100%.

  12. The character, Maximum Ride of the Maximum Ride series would fit in well at the ranch. She is very independent and knows what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. Altough she is a girl, she is not concerned about what she will look like so she is able to work better at the ranch. She is also very strong and intelligent and those qualities help in working at a ranch. She has leadership skills so she can help the other fellow workers and guide them. Maximum never gives up even when things get hard and that is crucial in a ranch since work can get difficult at times. Overall, Maximum would fit perfectly at a ranch because of her determination, strong will, and indepedence.

  13. In the tv show 24, Jack Bauer is the toughest agent around. He does whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and however he wants. He disobeys the government, he lies, cheats, and steals to get information to save his country. I believe he would definitely fit in on this farm. He would run it, everyone would be disciplined and his vocabulary is perfect for this setting.

  14. In the movie "The Dark Knight" batman is independent, stroung, and extremly smart. I think those are all the aspects needed to live on the ranch. You need to be independent because people could turn on you at any time. Stroung physically because of the long work hours and harsh conditions on the ranch. And you need to be smart because almost all the workers dont really want to spend the rest of their life on this ranch they want to get out and live on their own so they will cheat people in order to achieve that goal. You need to be smart so nobody rips you off. Batman kind of reminds me of Slim, because Slim seems to be independent because hes off by his own, stroung because he wont take crap and people are scared of him and hes smart because he always knows whats going on and can tell if someones lieing to him. All these reasons are why i think Batman would fint in on the ranch.

  15. The character Alex Rider, from the Alex Rider series, would fit into the ranch very well. Though he always seems to get himself mixed up in some plot that could destroy the earth every year, he is independent. That could be one advantage on the ranch because unless, you are Lennie and George. He is also very well built and is a black belt in karate, so if curly tried to pick a fight with him, Alex would take him down a couple of pegs.

  16. Spencer,
Though i have never seen 24, i do not know how well Jack Bauer would fit into ranch life. If he breaks all the rules as you say, then he will surely be fired. And if that does not get him fired I am sure his lying and cheating would.

  17. Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald) in the 1985 production, The Breakfast club, would not fit in a farm for one second. Claire is very privileged and her parents pay for everything she has. She is high maintenance and that is not possible at the farm.In the farm, you basically have to take whatever is given to you even if you dislike it. Claire is stuck up and if anyone says anything to offend her she gets deeply insulted. At the farm, the way they talk is rude, and crude (as Ben said) and Claire Standish would not STANDish for that!

  18. I really agree with Jack Stillman's statement on Modern Family. I think Manny is a perfect example of a character that would not be able to fit in at the ranch. He is too picky over everything he does. He requires a lot of attention and wouldn't be able to get by on the generic small portions of food in which the ranch offers. Manny is also someone who takes suggestions difficultly and is very sensitive where if someone from the ranch insulted him, he wouldn't be able to take it.

  19. I strongly agree with Jack Stillman's claim on Modern Family.

  20. I think that Katniss Everdeen, from the book The Hunger Games would fit perfectly on the ranch. Katniss comes from a tough life at home where she has to do all of the hunting and providing for the family because her father died. And when she is put into the arena to fight for her life she adapts very well to what she has to do to stay alive and she doesnt complain about it one bit. Katniss is someone can adapt to anything if its her only choice, she is very independent and likes to work for what she earns, she doesn't like to be taken care of. She would fit in very well at the ranch because of her sense of independence and strength.

  21. I think that Will from Ranger's Apprentice The Ruins of Gorlan would fit extremely well on the ranch. This is because he has a very friendly and easygoing personality. Also he is used to hard work. He is an orphan who learns quickly. In conclusion Will would fit in the ranch because of his personality, ability to work hard, and how he learns quickly.

  22. I think that Verbal, played by Kevin Spacey, from the movie "The Usual Suspects" would be someone who would fit in just fine on the ranch. Verbal would fit in with everyone at the ranch is because in the movie, he was able to portray a character that wasn't even real. Verbal played a cripple that had witnessed a murder. But really he wasn't a cripple or a weak guy, he was much more than that. It seemed like every one at that ranch hid something about themselves and that's exactly what Verbal did. He hid from everyone the real Verbal and succeeded by the fact that he walked out of the police station where he was being held and was never seen again. He decived everyone just like George and Lennie who told lies to get people off their backs which worked.

  23. I think that Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story would be a very fitting candidate to living on the farm. He is a fantastic leader and a seemingly good worker. He can work on his own and with a group of other people or even toys. Also, Buzz has good problem solving skills to go along with his brains and his brawn.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Patrick the Star from the television show Spongebob Squarepants on Nickelodeon would never be able to live on the farm. He is lazy, clumsy, and in all aspects stupid. He would not be able to do the simplest of jobs. Though he can give a good laugh, he would be fired for not accomplishing what is needed to be done. Patrick would also end up doing something to completely anger Curley, who would probably beat Patrick to a pulp.

  25. Sam Witwicky played by Shia LaBeouf in the movie Transformers would be a good fit on the ranch because of the leadership he shows throughout the movie and they way he easily adapts to new situations in seconds such as when he first met the robots and he was really confused but later discovered that they are the good guys, he would do the same on the ranch with the new work he would be facing.

    ReplyDelete
  26. In the movie Holes, the main character Stanley Yelnats is at first really skittish and weak. He does not at first stand up for himself or for his friends, and does everything he is told. But towards the end of the movie, he begins to stand up for what is right and bend the rules to help his friend Zero. I think that he would at first have a hard time fitting in and doing his full share of work. But give it a week, and he would start to fit in. But I do not think that he would ever ajust to the language they use, like when Carlson asks Slim "hows [his] bitch" when he really means female dog. Stanley would not start using terms like that.

  27. Sylar gray played by zachary quinto would be a good fit for the ranch. he is a serial killer from the show heroes. he is a very independent character and is secretively very lonely. He always is molded to new situations and does well in them. he might not completely acclimate well with curly but over all he would.

Marsellus Wallace from the movie Pulp Fiction would fit in this ranch. He is a Gangster played by Ving Rhames. Marsellus is a very powerful man. He is not afraid to stand up for himself, and if someone double crosses him or tries to hurt him in any way shape or form. It would be good to stay on his good side, because then nobody would mess with you, and if they did they would be in for a world of pain.

Max I agree with you that Sylar would be a good fit for this ranch. He does stay to himself mostly and if Curly got in his way he wouldn't have any trouble taking care of him. But Sylar would probably be to busy harvesting other heroes powers to be working on a ranch.

  30. Jake Sully from the movie Avatar would fit well on the ranch because he is a very open-minded person and strong and willing to fight for what he believes in. I also think he would be seen as a leader on the ranch and someone the guys look up to.

  31. I agree with aprils comment about batman in The Dark Knight. He is strong and willing to hurt people if they mess with him. He is very wise and knows a bad person when he sees one.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Specialist Owen Eldridge from the movie the Hurt Locker would not fit into the farm. Even though he is in the war in Iraq, he would not survive on the farm. Specialist Eldridge depends a lot on his fellow soldiers, where on the farm it's more of every man for himself. He also has a very nice personality that wouldn't help him out much because everyone would pick on him.

    ReplyDelete
  33. In the movie, The Blind Side, Michael Oher would fit on the ranch, because he's a big guy. He's strong and is obedient. He's very grateful for little things. He'd quickly do all the work he needs to do without complaining. He wouldn't pick a fight with anyone on the ranch and maybe even be friends with Crooks. He's just a sweet kid.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree with Alex Eikenberg's comment because Dwight knows about almost everything about anything. Dwight would fit in easily with the group because he can work and he is outstandingly smart. Dwight was also grown up on a farm so he already knows a lot about what he is doing.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think that "Man with no name" (Clint Eastwood) from the movie The Good The Bad and The ugly would be a perfect person to work on the ranch. "Man with no name" is a hard worker that minds his own business and does not go looking for trouble. He understands the value of money and doesn't mind being alone. All of these characteristics are necessary for living on the ranch. You must work hard on the ranch or you will be fired so that attribute is very important. Also it is best not to intrude on other people's business on the ranch because that is what most people dislike to talk about. The most important characteristic the "Man with no name" possesses is that he is very intelligent. Being inteligent is a attribute that most people on the ranch lack so having it puts you one step ahead of your competition.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jethrow Gibbs, played by actor Mark Harmon, would definately not fit in with everyone else in the farm. first of all, Gibbs is the boss, he doesn't get told what to do, he tells others what to do. Gibbs is also the guy that would look at a person and "judge a book by the cover", look at them and say whether he likes them or not. Most people at the farm just do what they are told and hang out with other people in their free time. That is the total opposite of what Gibbs is.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The character Chien-Po from the movie Mulan would not fit in well at the ranch. Although he is insanely strong just like Lennie and could definitely work well, his personality just isn't acceptable for the ranch. Chien-Po is a very caring person and would never hurt a fly. The guys at the ranch would pick him a part knowing that he wouldn't fight be willing to fight back. Chien-Po would especially have a problem with Curley just like Lennie did. Chien-Po is also extremely large and that would create problems as well due to the fact that all the workers share a living space. He also would probably be way too big for the small bed that each worker gets.

I think that Jack from the Titanic would fit in well at the ranch. He is very strong and gets everything done. He is obedient and always up for a challenge so the work would be no problem for him. He also would fit in with the guys that work there because he is the same class as them. He isn't high class so he wouldn't think he's above all the other people at the ranch like some people would. ANother reason he would do well at the ranch is because he is bright. If anyone at the ranch gets into trouble, they have to use their wit to get out of it or else they would be fired. Jack would be able to get out of all kinds of situations and stay for a long time.

  39. I think that Seth from Superbad would not fit in on the farm. Although he does have the necessary language to fit in, he breaks the law, quite frequently and when you break the law like Lennie did things aren't going to be good for you. By breaking the law it shows that he is a rebel and wont follow the rules set down by the boss and he could quite possibly get fired for that.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think that Seth from the movie Superbad would be unsuitable for the farm life. He breaks the law quite frequently throughout the movie, and when Lennie breaks the law on the farm, well lets just say things don't turn out good for him. By breaking the law Seth shows that he is a rebel and on the farm rebels are not tolerated, he could quite possibly get fired for breaking the bosses rules.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Forrest Gump, from the movie Forrest Gump, could probably fit in the ranch. He is very similar to the workers on the ranch, as they are basically uneducated and are hard workers. Forrest Gump is not smart, he minds his own business (except for Jenny's), does not try to pick fights, and works hard to earn a living. He is also very strong. Working is one of the few things that Forrest is very knowledgeable about, and this would help him get along with the others on the ranch.

  43. I think that Seth from Superbad would not be able to fit in on the farm. Also by breaking the law it shows that Seth is a rebel, and he could quite possibly get fired for breaking one of the rules set by the boss.

  44. Ryan Hauldren, Buzz Lightyear is a toy, and i do not think that that is a very safe environment and i do not believe he would be safe anywhere near Lennie's big paws (hands). Also Buzz Lightyear if you remember correctly messes everything up for the toys by trying to go into space and climbing into the Claw machine game... So i don not believe he is a good problem solver.

  45. I believe that James Bond would not be a very good fit on the ranch. Even though he is strong, smart, and determined, he just is not the type of person to be living on a ranch. Ranchers are mostly poor men who cant usually find themselves a job and will just take what money they can get. Bond is a British intelligence agent and a ranch just isnt the place for him to be living.

  46. Spinelli, who is a character from the show general hospital has a unique personality an only certain people understand it ad the others get annoyed or fusterated with him. he is a computer genious and solves most of his problems with his computer. so i dont think he would fit in at the ranch because the people at the ranch are judge mental and they would not understand his personality. he would definitely clash with the other people on the ranch and it would cause problems.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think Del Spooner(Will Smith), from I Robot, would be a great fit to the ranch. He's a reliable cop that would do anything to get the job done. He would fit in well with the workers on the ranch. I think he would work well with them.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ryan Hauldren, I completely disagree with you. I think that Buzz Lightyear is not a good fit for the ranch. He is a toy, and would not be a benefit at all to the ranch, or any of the workers for that matter. Also, just like Spencer had mentioned, he did not help out any of the toys, instead he figured he was "the best" and had gone ahead and did anything that would eventually ruin the toys cover. Buzz Lightyear would be a disaster on the ranch, and would cause many problems for all workers living on the ranch.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I believe that Dewey Fin (Jack Black) from the movie School of Rock would not be a good fit for the ranch. In School of Rock, Dewey Fin is always saying how you have to "stick it to the man" and the men on the ranch usually do what they are supposed and listen to their superiors. Dewey is more of a rebel and that type of person would not be accepted on the ranch.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think the character Miller from Green Zone would not fit in on the ranch. Although he shows great dedication and determination, those are not the types of qualities needed on a ranch. The men who work on the ranch are working just to get money and they are not determined for getting the job done. Miller on the other hand works not for the money but for the job he completes. He always does what ever it will take to get the job done, even if it means going against what his boss tells him to do.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I believe that the character Dewey Fin (Jack Black) from the movie School of Rock would not be a great fit for the ranch. In the movie, Dewey was always telling everyone that they had to "stick it to the man." The men on the ranch would not find this acceptable because mostly all of them do what they are told and listen to their superiors. Dewey is also a rebel and he would not be welcomed by the men on the ranch.

  52. In the book Little House on the Prairie by John Hawkins, the Ingalls family would definately fit to be on the ranch because, they're also a farming family. its different because they had to build their own house and make everything all by themselves, but with doing all of these things, they still had to learn the rules of the lifestyle in the priarie. They're basically working so they could get money, just like in the story, so i think that this family would fit in the ranch.

  53. the character Melanie in the book "The Host" by Stephenie Meyer would fit into the rach just fine. Melanie is extreamly brave and strong, so she can fit in with all the men in the ranch, evem though she is a woman. She also has tremendous leadership skill, she can be able to organize a fairly large group of people quickly. Melanie is also willing to do whatever job she has to do in order to help out whoever she lives with.

  54. In the movie Spider Man, the character Peter Parker would defintley fit into the ranch life. In this movie Peter Parker is adopted and lives with the normal struggles of youth, as well as becoming spider man. I think he would fit in to the "ranch life" because he is a brave, smart and polite man. In the book Of Mice and Men, each character has to watch their back and can not count on other people on the farm to do things for them. Spider man would be a good fit for this because his "uncle" dies and he has to provide for himself and cant necessarily count on other people to do chores for feed him. Spider Man is also a very polite man and is nice to everyone at school, on the streets and his elders. If you are not polite on the farm in Of Mice and Men, you will not recieve any respect so overall I think Spider Man is an excelltent fit for ranch life.

  55. Greta,
I completley agree with you that Peyton from One Tree Hill would be an excellent fit for the ranch life because she is such a strong character that stands out in the series. On the ranch, she would do anything needed by herself and would not let anyone push her around.

  56. In the book series, The Sword of Truth, the main character Richard Cyper/Raul is a lone traveler from a far away world. He is forced to go to a different realm and do the many things like kill his father or to lead a great kingdom. But half of the time, he doesn’t really know what he is doing. Richard could fit in the ranch because he is a hard working person but he also many different other motives to why he is doing what he is doing but at the same time he cares for others. This is just like many of the ranch workers in the story.

  57. I believe that Jason Burne would fit in perfectly with the life of the ranch because he is out for himself and doesn't attach too many social ties to many people, but only a select few. This is like the relationship between George and Lennie, because Lennie clings to George and talks to a few other people, but not many. Also, he does what needs to be done to keep peace and to find answers, regardless of how, which is alot like life on the farm, where people are only concerned about themselves and do not care how they get what they want. In conclusion, a tough dude only concerned about himself and his place in the world would be perfect to make the farm continue to grow.

  58. I think that Salvester Stalone from Rambo would do great on the ranceh. I think he would be perfect because he's not smart enought to make major decisions but he is strong and he can beat the living sh** out of anyone who would get in his way. At the same time, thanks to his black opps years, he actually can run away and live in a cave. Plus if he killed curley's wife, he could make it look like an accident.

  59. In our countries history, Al Capone was a notorious criminal, but he is also an excellent canadate to be able to be on the ranch. Al Capone is a lone wolf, strong, and extremly intelegent. Al Capone is a lone wolf because he is a criminal. On the farm Al Capone would fit in because he doesnt trust anyone because he is a lone wolf. Being a lone wolf is intemidating but it would help more if he was string as well. Al Capone is a strong individual because he beats up anyone who walks in his way. To work on the farm one must be strong. On the farm it is a lot of labor work, and a lot of work in the sun. If one is strong, then they know that its much better to be intelligent. Al Capone is intelligent because he knows how to escape from the cops. On the farm one must be intellegent because one must be able to know who to be able to trust. Al Capone would be a canadate to live on the farm for his qualities.

  60. In the movie The Blind Side, Michael Oher is a strong, hard working, and dedicated person. I believe that he would be an excellent addition to the ranch. The ranch requires men to work long, hard hours and thats all Michael Oher is used to. Football is a sport in which it requires long hours of work and dedication. Also the ranch doesn't seem like a nice fancy hotel. Michael Oher grew up in a very poor neighborhood. So if he was working on the ranch it would be no different for him, it would be like home to him.
